MOVING ADVICE

How to pack for a house move

Room-by-room packing advice, materials, labelling and how to decide between self-packing and a packing service.

Choose materials that match the items

Use sturdy boxes that can be closed securely, with suitable protection for glass, ceramics, electronics and framed items. Avoid making large boxes too heavy; books are usually safer in smaller boxes. Never pack prohibited, hazardous or perishable goods without checking the removals provider’s conditions.

Pack one room at a time

Label each box with the destination room and a brief description of contents, not just a number. Keep essentials such as documents, keys, medicines and chargers with you. Seal liquids and protect delicate surfaces. Photograph complicated cable connections before disconnecting equipment.

Protect furniture and fragile belongings

Remove loose parts from furniture and store them in labelled bags. Identify anything requiring dismantling or professional handling before quoting. Clearly flag glass, artwork, mirrors and particularly vulnerable possessions. Check what protection or cover is included if the provider is packing the items.

Full packing or partial packing?

A full packing service can reduce preparation time if you have many rooms or a tight schedule. Partial packing can focus on kitchens, fragile objects or specific areas. Ask for the number of packers, materials, exclusions and timing to be stated in the quote.

Before the vehicle arrives

Clear access routes, separate items not being moved, confirm parking arrangements and communicate last-minute inventory changes. Good preparation helps the loading process run more smoothly, although actual timings depend on access and the job size.
